Did you know that the sq?awsitkw (Okanagan River) system was once rich with Sockeye, Chinook, Coho, Steelhead and other salmonid species? Through Syilx ceremonies and a multitude of Okanagan Nation Alliance fisheries projects, the river and salmon are coming back to their historical waters, but there is still a lot of work to do! We will walk along the channelized upper reach of sq?awsitkw up to Okanagan Lake Dam as we discuss the latest in projects, salmon returning to k?usxnitkw (Okanagan Lake). This tour will follow a mix of gravel and paved paths (accessible for most wheelchairs) and is suitable for all ages.
Zoe Eyjolfson has worked for Okanagan Nation Alliance for the last 14 years as a Fluvial Geomorphologist. She primarily works on river restoration and fish passage projects and is honored to work with the ONA and the Syilx Nation to bring the river and fish back to the Okanagan Basin.
