Description Of This Tour
The Important Bird Area (IBA) Program is designated by a specific set of scientific criteria and includes critical sites in over 100 countries. The Kilpoola area is identified as one of these globally sensitive areas. This site is adjacent to the Washington State border which makes it essential for the north and south movement of both plant and animal species. Join South Okanagan Naturalists’ Club member Doreen Olson along with Conservation Northwest’s Sagelands Program lead Jay Kehne to learn about this important connectivity corridor. See interesting lakes, an old growth forest, birds, plants, and exceptional views while enjoying a day in the South Okanagan wilderness.
Please Note: Due to access, the location of this tour has been changed to another IBA, Little Chopaka. This area is part of the South Okanagan Grasslands Protected area and also provides beautiful views and biodiversity. At this site, we will also discuss controlled cultural burns and their importance. Meadowlarks are abundant and Lewis’ Woodpecker’s are known to nest here. Meeting point remains the same. BC Nature Important Bird Area (IBA) Assistant Coordinator, Angela Hansen, will join Doreen and Jay to will share their knowledge on the IBA program.
Note: the road is unpaved and dusty.
Tour Leaders: Doreen Olson, Jay Kehne
