Join Alison Moran for a tour focused on hummingbirds of the Okanagan. We’ll start at the Frog City Cafe to enjoy complimentary tea/coffee and treats while learning about the hummingbirds we can see here, how they use the landscape and some of the challenges they face. Alison will share ideas about ways that we can all help hummingbirds. We’ll follow up with an easy going walk through beautiful Linden Gardens and maybe spot some hummingbirds in action!

The paths at the gardens are not paved, however they are wide and level for those needing accessibility. Accessible washrooms are on site. Tour price includes refreshments and a garden pass. You are welcome to explore the gardens on your own after the tour.

Dr. Alison Moran coordinates the Hummingbird Project out of the Rocky Point Bird Observatory in Victoria BC. They monitor hummingbirds in BC and Alberta and have found that some species are in steep decline. This team have learned what hummingbirds eat and discovered that in some areas, these birds are exposed to high levels of agricultural pesticides.

The Hummingbird Project is launching a new citizen science initiative to look at large-scale hummingbird movements. They want to understand how hummingbird movements relate to air quality across a range of habitats. Specifically, they are looking for volunteers who live outside the urban centres and who feed hummingbirds across the breeding season. If you are interested in participating in nectar-use monitoring and finding out if your location might be suitable for inclusion in this study, please let us know at hummingbird@rpbo.org.
