Join Anona Kampe, Penticton Indian Band member in the Okanagan Nation, and Lisa Scott, professional biologist and director of the Okanagan and Similkameen Invasive Species Society, for an exploration of the beautiful and significant landscape surrounding White Lake. Anona will explain the importance of the land to the syilx Okanagan people since time immemorial. Participants will learn about local plants, harvesting practices, animals and landforms, and Anona will share the Okanagan language called nsyilxcn and translations in English. Lisa will provide information on important conservation and invasive plant work being done in the basin to protect a myriad of species and ecosystems at risk. In the spring grasslands there will be wildflowers, lots of song birds including canyon wrens and bluebirds, birds of prey, and possibly snakes! Suitable for ages 8+.

A member of the Penticton Indian Band or snpintktn in the syilx Okanagan Nation, Anona Kampe has worked within the Nation sharing syilx Okanagan culture, language and Indigenous perspectives with many organizations. Anona shares in a good way, never claiming to know everything, rather admittedly a lifelong learner. She shares what has been shared with her by her Elders, knowledge keepers and fluent speakers.

Lisa Scott was born and raised in the Okanagan Valley. She is humbled and grateful to live, work and play within the traditional, unceded territory of the syilx People. Lisa is a Professional Biologist and has worked as a consultant in the fields of invasive species management, environmental assessments and conservation planning for 29 years. She is a strong proponent of holistic management and community-based conservation.
